Below we have added charts to see the Readers progress on their STAR assessments from August until February and also their AR Goals.
Our team has tracked progress of our Reader Leaders and it seems to be very successful this school year. The graphs above show student progress. We also wanted to include some comments from our teachers here at Flat Gap Elementary.
The Reader Leader Program has been a hit with my third graders. Not only has their reading improved but they are coming out of their shell as well. They get so excited when one of their leaders speaks to them in the hallway. We even had a few parents mention how their child wants to practice reading at home so their leader will see improvement. The program has encouraged students to read on their own and gotten them excited about their reading fluency growth. After the tough year we have had due to Covid, it has been so great to see something that the students look forward to in their learning.- Mrs. Young
Academic improvement occurs when there’s a perfect storm of cognitive ability, support from others, and effort on the part of the student. I have seen our reader leader program be an amazing motivator for one student, inspiring them to practice reading more on their own time and, ultimately, I have seen vast improvements in this student’s reading ability. I have one student who reads well who has benefitted from the social interaction this program provides and I have seen them come out of their shell. My 4th grade leaders are always eager to work with their readers. They offer lots of praise to the first graders they work with and feel a sense of pride in knowing that they are helping fellow students. -Mrs. Fields
The Reader Leader program has truly helped close the reading gaps created by the COVID shut down. The amazing thing that Reader Leader does is put students in a leadership position that allows them to track and see growth within themselves and the students in which they help. This program has made a positive impact on the reading culture in our school.

I have seen such growth in my 6th graders! They find joy in sharing the responsibility of finding a book that will challenge, but not frustrate "their 3rd grader". Each 6th grader is so proud and happy when a 3rd grader scores well on an AR test! Frequently, there is spontaneous cheering. Mrs. Reed
