JCCS SENIORS GET A PEEK INTO PARENTHOOD THROUGH FLOUR BABIES
JCCS SENIORS GET A PEEK INTO PARENTHOOD THROUGH FLOUR BABIES
Mackenzie Gandolfo
The halls look a little bit different this week, as some of JCCS's seniors started carrying around flour babies. Mrs Johnson's Psychology class got to have a look into what their potential futures look like. During the week, students have to take their babies on various outings and spend all day with them in order to reflect on what it is actually like to have your child with you at all times. The duration of this project if usually around one week and seniors need to buy a bag of flour, diapers, a bottle, an outfit, and a blanket. The majority of the students really enjoy this project as they can dress the baby how they want.

What is the purpose of the seniors having these babies for the week?
The flour baby project is designed for students to learn about the human growth and development of infants, gain a realistic understanding of the time, cost, and energy it takes to raise babies, and make real-time decisions regarding the care of infants.
How did they construct the babies?
Students construct the babies using a 5-pound bag of flour for the body. They use women's stockings for the head, arms, and legs. The head is made using Polyfill and they dress the babies in onesies with hats.
What do the seniors have to do in order to get a good grade?
Students must care for the students for 7 days. This includes keeping a log with feeding and changing times. They also have to calculate the costs associated with raising infants in their first year of life. We discuss caring for babies and baby safety. Their final assessment is a reflection of the week and what they have learned.
Is this one of ur favorite things to close out the school year?
I would enjoy this project any time of the year. One drawback of doing it at the end of the year is that I always wish we had a few more days for additional activities.
Where did this idea come from?
Mrs. Muller is a great science teacher and co-worker. She shared this project with me and I am grateful that she did.
