Mathematics is the language of the universe, the language of science and engineering. It allows us to make better decisions about our daily lives and build a better world.
The focus of this subject is about having fun with Mathematics and to learn about concepts that are not in the Victorian Curriculum.
This subject consists of several topic areas:
• The Mathematics of Card tricks
• Good Will Hunting and Graph Theory
• The Platonic Solids and Origami
• Multiple Dimensions
• Fractals (Sierpinski Triangle, The Mandelbrot Set)
• Famous Numbers (pi, phi (and the Fibonacci Sequence), e)
For this assignment, the students designed their own card trick which used perfect in and out shuffles. They needed to find the patterns in the way the cards moved to fit with their story.
The most haunted ship on Earth 'The Queen Mary' - Cabin 83
Jack and his Secret Sniper Life
Death in Clubsilvania
The King with the heart of Gold - the 55 card trick!
The Craziest Customer Story
An Evil Mathematician called Zeno
Cinderella with a Twist
Once there lived a guy called Jack
In the Mathemagaic Card Trick unit, students learn various card tricks. One of my favourite card tricks is the 27 card trick. The volunteer chooses a favourite number between 1 and 27, then picks a card from the deck. The deck is then shuffled and the awesome Mathematician at JMSS then find the volunteer's card (using mathematics) which is in the favourite number's position!
Students learnt about the 5 Platonic Solids. They explored questions such as
Why are there only 5?
What do they represent?
What are they made up of and why are they so cool?
Using origami the students made the
icosahedron - 12 sonobe units
hexahedron - 6 sonobe units
tetrahedron - 3 sonobe units
Students also learnt about Graph Theory through the Bridges of Konigsberg and the film Good Will Hunting.
What is a fractal? How are they made? What features do they have and what is there dimension?
This beautiful fractal was discovered in only 1980. Students learnt how the fractal is formed by understanding complex numbers and iterative processes.
The Mobius Strip not only makes a feature in the Avengers film but is an interesting mathematical object with interesting properties.
