This semester, in Biotechnology, students have investigated a range of topics in the areas of cell biology, genetics and DNA manipulation. The focus of the course has been to understand the fundamentals of these disciplines of Biology. A key focus was developing the skills to apply their knowledge of the structure and function of the DNA molecule to examine how molecular tools and techniques can be used to manipulate the molecule for a particular purpose, and to use this information to analyse the interrelationship between scientific knowledge and its applications in society.
DNA Extraction
Students worked in teams to design and conduct an experiment online to extract and compare the amount of DNA that could be extracted from various fruits.
Gel Electrophoresis
The moment that remote learning ended students were back in the lab practising the micropipetting skills by setting up gel electrophoresis runs.
In pairs, students researched and designed an infographic style poster to explain how Cystic Fibrosis, Marfan's Syndrome, Alpha-1 Antitrypsin Deficiency, Haemophilia or Haemoglobin disorders arise genetically and the impacts they have on a person with that condition.
