If you are struggling with concepts in this class, or finding it difficult to fully apply the scientific thinking, don't panic! We know this is a challenging class, but are here to support you so you can be successful.
(see the "Loving Boot" at right--named for its shape--which illustrates the relationship of challenge and support to student outcomes)
We aim to challenge you and support you to push your learning.
Here are some structures and steps you can take if you find yourself struggling:
Really take advantage of this website! Along the left side you will find Course Resources including our custom textbook and links to CodeHS.
Approach your teacher directly with specific questions - All teachers are available for 1-1 scheduled time outside of class.
After-school help sessions - There will be open office hours every Friday afternoon (3:10-4:15) in G306. A Life Science teacher will be at each session (not necessarily your teacher). Please note that Fridays are chosen so as not to conflict with after-school sports (Mon&Th), service clubs (Tues.), or faculty meetings (Weds.) during this time.
Code Club and CodeHS - If you are finding the coding specifically challenging, you can self-practice with your account on CodeHS or reach out to the HS Code Club for tutoring.
NHS tutoring - National Honor Society members are JIS upperclassmen selected for their academic excellence and dedication to service. They serve as tutors and are available for any subject. You can sign up with them directly through their website.
Peers - One of the things we love about science is that it is collaborative by nature. Work together and help each other learn, and you all benefit. Every ninth grader at JIS is taking the same course. Collaborative learning is encouraged, though of course individual output is necessary for summative assessments.
