Located in Montana's state capital of Helena, Lewis and Clark Humane Society (LCHS) was founded in 1964. It is considered a no kill shelter unless they are dealing with a dangerous animal. They are a nonprofit organization that holds stray or unwanted animals for three counties; Lewis and Clark, Jefferson, and Broadwater. It primarily houses dogs and cats, but they will take other small animals in on occasion. The goal of the shelter is to reduce the need for euthanasia and to reduce overpopulation. All animals that are taken in by LCHS are vaccinated, microchipped, and spayed or neutered. They recently got an onsite vet that provides around the clock medical care to their animals. LCHS also holds animals awaiting cruelty trials. The shelter does their best to provide socialization and prevent extended stays. They have a fostering program that provides animals with temporary homes while they are waiting for their forever one.
