A memorial to the 350 Jewish men from Korets who were taken away in August 1941 by the Ukrainians. These Jews were forced to build roads and then were slaughtered or buried alive in the Sochovola forest (10 km northeast of Korets). Among them was Joseph Helman, the father of Holocaust survivor, Fania Helman Wedro and Shunye Shapira, the brother of Asa Shapiro. The brother (name?) of Mendel Tessler was also among those taken to Sochovola and killed.
In 1992, Fania Wedro returned to the forest where the killings took place and erected a Matzevah in memory and honor of her father and the other men from Korets who were murdered there.
A translation of the Hebrew portion of the monument:
On this spot were killed, died, or buried alive in the Hebrew month of Elul, 5701 (corresponding to August, 1941) at the hands of the German Nazi murderers 350 Jewish men from the community of Koretz and surrounding areas. We pay honor to their holy memories. May their souls be bound up in the bond of everlasting life.
