Course Description: AP Chemistry is a rigorous course designed to be the equivalent of the general chemistry course usually taken during the first year of college. The AP Chemistry curriculum is built on the guidelines provided by the College Board, focusing on nine topics: Atomic Structures and Properties, Molecular and Ionic Compounds, Intermolecular Forces, Chemical Reactions, Kinetics, Thermodynamics, Equilibrium, Acids and Bases, and Applications of Thermodynamics. Students will participate in lab experiments, modeling and simulations, and group problem-solving activities, and will use mathematical strategies from algebra, geometry, and precalculus to solve chemistry problems. Students estimate
1 Week of Homework (Sample):
Watch/take notes on 2 video lectures on acid-base titrations
Practice with online simulation
Meet with study group to complete problem set
Write lab analysis of data from in-class titration experiment
Complete retake of reduction/oxidation reactions learning target (optional)
Time Commitment:
Students in the 2022-23 AP class were asked how many hours of work outside of class are recommended to be successful in AP Chemistry. Below are the results of this poll:
8% say more than 6 hours/week
19% say 5-6 hours/week
50% say 3-4 hours/week
22% say 1-2 hours/week
0% say less than 1 hour/week
Test Preparation:
For those interested in taking the AP test in the spring, attendance at bi-weekly flextime sessions is highly recommended. These additional sessions will include lectures on topics not covered in class, test-taking practice, and bonus lab experiences that may appear on the AP test.

Additional Information/ Considerations: If you are interested in the sciences, Oceana HS offers multiple science electives: AP Chemistry, Environmental Science, College Prep Physics, and College Prep Physiology, depending on student interest. Environmental Science is a hands on science class that uses ecology, biology, basic chemistry and natural resources to learn about global and local environmental issues. College Prep Physics is a lab based, hands-on science course where students learn how the physical world works, deepening their understanding of physics with a mathematical focus. College Prep Physiology focuses on the structure and function of different human body systems, using a variety of strategies including lecture, laboratory work, demonstrations, projects, group work, presentations, and dissections (included but not mandatory).
