YPAS Concerto Competition

The annual YPAS concerto competition, held at the beginning of each school year, is open to all the YPAS junior and seniors who play an instrument or sing. Many outstanding YPAS students have entered this competition. For the first round, they perform for all the YPAS music faculties, and for the final round, they will perform for adjudicators who are professional musicians or university music faculties. Three most outstanding young musicians are chosen to receive this highest honor at YPAS and to perform with full orchestra during the school year.

Congratulations to all 13 YPAS Concerto Competition participants! Our guest judges, Mark Kano, Curtis Essig and Christopher Robinson had some challenges picking the top performances. The YPAS Symphony Orchestra is honored to work with the following students in the performances below:

Tuesday, December 16th at 7pm:

Maya Nanda and Lily Perry - Voices

Hi, my name is Lily Perry, and I love to sing! I am a senior at YPAS and a part of various vocal ensembles like chamber choir, concert, soprano-alto, and opera workshop. I have been singing for about 10 years now and I’ve been studying with Elizabeth & Garret Sorenson for 9 years. Additionally, I’ve been a member of the Louisville Youth Choir for 8 years. I’m a dedicated and passionate person with a strong commitment to making societal change by questioning traditional ideals and using music to do so. I’m a very creative thinker and will always advocate for myself and my community. I plan to pursue a career in operatic performance while managing my own private voice studio. I’m very excited to sing with the YPAS Orchestra and very honored to have placed in the competition with Maya Nanda!

Hi, my name is Maya Nanda, and I am a junior at YPAS. I am a part of concert choir, soprano-alto, and opera workshop. I have been singing with Elizabeth and Garrett Sorenson for 12 years and I have taken piano lessons for 10 years. I have loved singing for my entire life and I plan to pursue classical vocal performance in college and as a career. While I am not focusing on music I am reading, baking, or playing with my cat, Fable. I am so excited to sing with the YPAS orchestra and I am so honored to have placed in the competition with Lily Perry!

Wanda Wu - Piano

Hello, my name is Wanda and I am a junior in MST. I have been playing the piano for 9 years, and have been studying with Dr. Anna Petrova for 2. I enjoy playing both solo repertoire and in chamber groups, and some of my favorite composers include Ludwig van Beethoven, Maurice Ravel, and Felix Mendelssohn. I have participated in various music competitions and programs, including the MTNA competitions, American Protege International, and the Governor's School for the Arts program. Outside of music, I enjoy baking, painting, and participating in Science Olympiad. I hope to continue to pursue both music and my STEM field in the future.
