History of Olmsted Academy North

Southern Leadership Academy and Iroquois Middle School were reorganized in 2008 due to a statewide audit to become new, gender-specific schools.

After recommendations from student leadership, parents, and staff, both schools chose to name themselves after Frederick Law Olmsted, a famous park developer who created the park system of Louisville. The Jefferson County Board of Education approved this change in 2008.

Students at Olmsted Academy North participated in a schoolwide vote to determine the school mascot and colors. The Colts were chosen by the students due to the proximity of Churchill Downs and our city’s ties to horse racing. The horseshoe was selected as our symbol after the Indianapolis Colts won the Super Bowl that year and a horseshoe was found on school grounds signifying good luck. The found horseshoe is proudly on display in our front lobby.

Students decided that our school colors would be blue and yellow. Olmsted North stands committed to providing a top-quality education experience for young men.
