Dress Code

Our primary focus is to provide all students with a safe and positive learning environment. We value the diversity of our students and believe that these guidelines will not impede that diversity. The purpose of this dress code is to enhance school safety, improve the learning environment, and to promote successful behavior. All students are expected to dress appropriately for the activities of the school day and the weather. In order to achieve this goal, the following guidelines are in place at Hawthorne Elementary School.

Tops and bottoms must overlap at all times, including when arms are raised.
Shorts, pants, and skirts should all be of an appropriate length and fitted at the waist so as not to expose undergarments. Appropriate length is mid-thigh for shorts and skirts.
No sleeveless tops or dresses.
No open-toed, heeled, backless, or shoes with wheels. Crocs must be in sport mode (straps worn around the heel).
No hoods covering the face or head are allowed while in the building.

No hats and bandanas worn during the school day unless for school sponsored activities or for religious or cultural reasons.
No coats during the school day. Sweaters, sweatshirts, and light jackets are allowed.
No article of clothing or accessory that promotes drugs, alcohol, tobacco, sex, violence, weapons, or is offensive or degrading.
No article of clothing that may cause a distraction to the educational process or is deemed inappropriate or unsafe.

If there is a question about the appropriateness of a student’s dress, the decision will be made by the principal, assistant principal, or counselor.

Disciplinary measures for dress code violations:

Teacher documented conference with student
Teacher documented communication with parent/caregiver
Administrative conference with parent/caregiver with documented expectations
