In this edition of the Bear Necessities we are highlighting the voices of 6th graders here at Brown! Students in Stephanie Eilers class wrote poems modeled after Langston Hughes Mother to Son poem, and you can read five of those works below.

Father to Son
By: Henry Thacher
Son I’ll warn ya’:
Life is just a mountain, difficult to climb.
It's rugged, and rocky.
For I've not yet reached the top.
I’ve only reached the middle.
Too tired to carry on.
Weary, yet bold.
But the whole time I've kept climbing.
Not once stopping for air
Alas, we reach the end but everything has changed.
I’ve watched you grow, as tall as the tree-tops.
For if this is our end, we shall not go in vain.
At the end of my climb, yours just begins.
But yours is cut short by a mountainous rumble.
For my climb had never been stopped.
But as the day comes to an end, I'm not ready to go.
I just think that you should know, I'm very proud of you son.

Mother to Daughter
By: Za’kari Cowherd
Now Kari,
I aint gonna say life is just a smooth bike ride,
Oh no, this bike ride has been through some storms, rain, and fog.
I’ve gone up hills and down mountains.
inside caves and riding by speeding cars.
Riding in the dark with only my bike light,
and you are that light.
This bike has been up a mountain making me slick with sweat.
This bike has been bitten at, bullied and hurt many times before.
But I kept going.
With you, I am now at the top of that mountain
that has tried to knock, shake, and throw me off.
You're the power that I now know I’ve needed all along.
My bike was all gray and dusty,
With you in my life my bike is vibrant purple and shiny with joy.
I have taught you to ride safely when I didn’t.
So don’t you try and stop riding on your own bike
For I will be the light, in your dark
For I will guide you steady when I’m wobbly
For I will be the light you need till there is no more.

Fade and Float
By: Anders Stiebling
Son, oh son
Life is like a blooming wisteria tree
Some may fade while others may float
I know I’m fading but I won’t let you go
I myself will fade to make sure you float
I want you to bloom and I want you to blossom
Even when I couldn’t I shall make sure you do
Son, oh son
My life was cruel
Always withering and always breaking
Branches snapping
And wind flaring
But I’ll make sure you turn out different
Even when others fall and wither away
I’ll make sure to hang on and push you up
So that on day I can watch you blossom
Millennia may pass and I will too
But It’ll all be worth it when I see you bloom
Son, oh son
Please remember me
Your mother and your guardian angel
Your care taker and your motivation
Everything that you needed and I would provide
Everything you wanted and I won’t deny
That you are my everything so please make sure
That one day when I wither and fade
I want you to keep going, blossom, and glow
Make me smile one more time right before I leave
Son, oh son, you are my everything
I hope you understand that others may fall
But stand tall and move on
So when others fade, you can float.

You'll Find Your Way
By: Audrianna Brown
Listen daughter,
Life for me ain't no easy puzzle.
Some of my pieces were torn up,
And missing,
And I had to build it in the dark
With no picture.
But as time went on,
I kept piecing the puzzle together,
And as I grew older the light got brighter,
And tryna see the full picture,
And reachin’ for the final piece.
So girl, take your time,
Cause once you rush it,
There aint no goin back.
For I still puzzling baby,
And life for me ain't no easy puzzle.

Father to Son
By: Beckett Wise
Boy, I’ll tell you
Life for me has been a boxing match.
It’s got punches,
And knockouts,
And jabs to the liver.
And the feeling of getting thrown against the canvas-
Hurt;
But everytime,
I’ve been getting back up,
And throwing punches back,
And dodging the punches thrown,
And sometimes taking hits,
When you couldn’t stand it anymore.
So promise me,
Right now, you won’t quit,
You won’t stay down,
That you’ll always get back up.
It might be hard,
But I'm still standing.
I’m still punching,
Still dodging.
Life for me has been a boxing match.
