The focus of the Adventure Passage is a personal quest. This Passage is like the mythical hero’s journey. After the quest becomes clear, the hero prepares for a meaningful search or journey. Leaving a familiar environment (physical and/or emotional), students are tested by facing the risks and challenges, known and unknown, internal and external, which are presented by the quest. In the end, affected by their pursuit of the quest, the hero returns to the world transformed and enlightened. The Adventure Passage can be a physical quest such as a road trip or international travel, or it can be an interpersonal or intrapersonal quest such as working on healthy self-esteem or creating meaningful relationships.
For the Career Exploration Passage, students explore careers related to their interests, passions, talents, and experiences. Students choose a vocation that would allow them to carry out their mission in life or “create the world that ought to be”. Essential parts of this Passage are a personal profile, interviews, hands-on experience in the chosen career, a résumé, an investigation into the training or education necessary to enter the field, and an exploration of the job market and related fields.
For the Creativity Passage, students explore a concept, develop a design, and carry out a process to make a unique, personal final product. The intent of the Passage is to help students understand the creative process, both their own and that of others. The ability to create is not “mystical” or a natural gift possessed by only a few. It is a process of generating ideas, planning, solving problems, making changes, and understanding the process of creation. Creativity is not limited to the arts!
The Global Awareness Passage gives students the ability to "create the world that ought to be." In order to complete the Passage, students will identify a current issue in the world upon which they want to have an impact. Through their research on that issue, they will gain a broadened global perspective. They will write a formal research paper, educate others about the issue, and perform action to have an effect on the issue. Students will have the opportunity to experience education outside the four walls of a classroom. The purpose of the Passage is to promote the idea that one person truly can make a difference.
A Logical Inquiry Passage is a mental challenge, following the scientific method to discover an answer to a question or problem that has personal meaning and relevance to the student. This Passage is about thinking and rethinking a problem, introducing a variable, designing an experiment, and measuring the effects of that variable. The process demands the use of reasoning, problem-solving, research, investigation, data collection, analysis, synthesis, conclusions, inferences, and self-critique.
For the Practical Skills Passage, students do something for themselves that ordinarily someone else has done for them. Often this involves a manual skill and will yield some product in addition to a journal or written description of what they have done. However, students should not limit their thinking to manual skills exclusively. For example, students have completed this Passage by mastering such activities as learning a second language, living on their own, and developing communication skills.
