Module 1: What a Character!
Essential Question: What makes a character interesting?
Reading:
Over the next three weeks, our class will build their knowledge about story characters and what makes them unique, with a focus on the realistic fiction genre. We will read texts about interesting characters who are true to themselves when faced with a challenge. Children will also write a personal narrative that tells how a story character inspired an idea that helped them solve a problem.
Writing:
Students will use the writing process to write personal narratives.
At home: Please make sure your child is reading for at least 20 minutes every night.
STEM- To start our STEM work we will go over digital and engineering practices that we will use to connect to learning all year.
Social Studies- In Social Studies this year we will be learning about regions of Colorado, as well as how those regions have changed economically and politically over time. We will start the year with Southeast Colorado.
Science- In our 1st Unit students explore the forces all around them. They investigate the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces, the pushes and pulls of bridge structures, and the effects of friction on the motion of objects. Students also explore the power of magnetic forces and investigate firsthand how these forces can be used to help us in our everyday lives.
