Texas - the armadillo.
Oklahoma - the buffalo.
Arizona - the ring-tailed cat.
New Mexico - the black bear.
Ring-tailed cats eat rodents, insects, and occasionally fruit. They like to move dens frequently to avoid predators. They are amazingly flexible and agile. Most litters are two to four babies, and they are born blind and deaf.
Black bears live mainly in forests, feeding on fruit and nuts. Black bears are unusually strong, and can flip boulders with a single paw. Black bears can climb trees, and are often seen on the top branch of a tree.
Armadillos are closely related to anteaters, and are the only mammals alive that have this type of shell. Armadillo is a Spanish word that means "little armored one". They like to eat ants, termites, spiders, and beetles.
Buffalo are the biggest living animals in north america. They can weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Their tails can be up to three feet long, and are used to swat away pesky bugs and mosquitoes. Buffalo are herbivores, and feed off grass and vegitation.
Collared peccary live in groups that normally have five to nine members. They live in burrows, but sometimes sleep in caves and under logs. They bark when they are shocked or alarmed. They are mainly herbivorous, but also eat snakes and insects.
Mexican wolves are the rarest gray wolf in north america. There are none in the wild, and few in captivity. The Mexican wolf eats things such as deer and peccary, but also eats small rodents such as squirrels, rabbits, and mice.
Black tailed jackrabbits are a kind of hare common in dry deserts. Black tailed jackrabbits eat a lot of grasses, but also eat certain types of cacti and sagebrush. Females can give birth several times a year, with one to six children. The children grow up very fast and don't need much care.
Goats of either gender can have horns, but some are born naturally without horns. This is called "polled". Goats can give milk. Typically goats are normally pregnant for about 150 days, and give birth to two to three kids, but Nigerian Dwarf goats can have up to five every pregnancy.
Sidewinders got their name from the way they move sideways in the sand and dirt. Sidewinders are a type of nocturnal rattlesnake. Unlike most snakes, sidewinder eggs hatch in the body and give birth to live snakes. Sidewinder snakes can give birth to five to eighteen babies per pregnancy.
Rosy boas are one of the smallest boa constrictors, and rarely grows to three feet. They are nocturnal creatures, but in cooler climates they might start to come out at noon. Rosy boas are one of the slowest moving snakes. They eat rodents such as kangaroo rats, but will also eat small birds and lizards. Rosy boas are endangered due to urbanization.
Desert iguanas eat buds, insects, and flowers. Predators of them and there eggs are birds of prey, foxes, and some snakes. Desert iguanas normally live up to fourteen years. Females can lay up to eight eggs, and typically hatch after sixty days. They can grow up to sixteen inches long, and normally grow to up ten inches when they are adults.
Cactus wrens are the largest wrens in north america. They like to eat small bugs and insects, but also eats small lizards and smaller birds. The cactus wren was named the state bird of Arizona. Cactus wrens like to live in cactus plants and other spiky plants. It makes two to five nests, but only ever lives in one of those many nests made out of twigs.
Desert box turtles eat grass and vegetation, but also bugs such as termites and beetles. Desert box turtles typically have two to three babies per pregnancy, but occasionally can have up to eight. Dessert box turtles give birth normally once every year. Sometimes, in areas with colder climates, these creatures do need to hibernate occasionally if it gets too cold.
Both genders of the Gambel's Quail have a big comma shaped puff of feathers on it's forehead, which in males it it is fuller. Adults eat mainly seeds and grasses, but chicks eat small bugs such as termites and ants. When they go out to get food, they hop around the ground looking for seeds, saplings, and tall grasses to pull out of the ground.
The canyon tree frog is quite small, and it typically grows up to two inches. It has large sticky pads on it's feet for climbing. And it does live in canyons, but on warm days it will leave the canyon, and on hot days it will hide in little caves. The canyon tree frog likes to eat flies, beetles, ants, and other small bugs, as they are every where in this region.
