Grades are determined by the following scales:

60% Assessments or projects, 30% Check-in (Quizzes), 10% Check My Understanding (Practice Problems) Activities,

 Formative and Summative Assessments

There will be assessments after every unit. To do well on assessments, students must study and participate in class activities. There will be check-ins during each unit. Check-in will be given frequently throughout each unit to show learning of standards.

Standard Corrections

Students will have an opportunity to improve check-ins and unit tests .  To improve check-ins and test scores, students must show their understanding of each standard by showing evidence that they have studied that standard.  To see ways to study, go to the test reassessment form tab above. When the students feel that they are able to show their understanding of the standards, without help from the teacher, they will take a reassessment quiz.

Supplies

Check-your-understanding Questions

There will be Check-Your-understanding questions (Practice Problems) that are worked on during class or assigned to complete after school.  If you don't use your time wisely during class, you may have up to 20 minutes of work to complete at home.  We will review the Check-Your-Understanding questions the next day. I will grade the Check-Your-Understanding questions in class with you. You never turn these in. Check-your-understanding Questions will be graded as following:

Check-your-understanding Questions are graded by completion.

Work needs to be shown and steps to justify solutions for all probems to get full credit

Points are taken away by students not attempting all problems.

 Late Work Policy

I will accept late work till the end of the trimester.  The philosophy behind this is activities are practice and I want the work to be done and life happens. Some units are only two weeks.  Don’t get too far behind on turning in work or you will have 2 – 3 hours of math assignments to complete over the weekend. You may correct assignments for 80 - 100%.

Check-Your-Understanding Problems (Practice Problems) show me our work when you have completed the problems

Extra Credit

Since we are now standard base grading there is no need to have extra credit. If you are not happy with your grade, study the standards that you didn't do well on and retake that standard quiz.

Khan Academy

We use Khan Academy as a compliment to the math curriculum. It is intended to be an online resource to prepare, practice, and master the skills they are learning in school.

Fridays will be our Khan Day. Students will be assigned Khan concepts on Friday and will have the class to work on the assigned skills.

Grading scale

Each skill is worth 4 points.

4 points for 70% or better on the skill

3 points for 60%- 69% on the skill

2 points for 50% - 59% on the skill

1 points for 1% - 49% on the skill

0 points for not attempting the skill

For late work, tell me or email me to check Khan

Classroom Expectations

1. Be prepared for class before the bell rings.  This means all materials (comp book, pencil, and pens) are in the classroom at the beginning of class.

2. Use class time effectively.  Stay on task and make an honest effort on every activity.

3. We deserve a learning environment, so Be SAFE, Be RESPECTFUL, Be ENGAGED

4.  Do not affect the learning of others.

5.  Students who continually require my attention for disciplinary reasons will have a conference and consequences will be determined then.

Cell Phones

CELL PHONE:  Summit Ridge Middle School will require that all Student’s phones are OFF AND AWAY during school hours. By OFF AND AWAY we mean that students should have their phone in their backpack, and not on their person during school hours. Research shows that Middle Schoolers do better with phones away during school hours. Students are more present and more engaged socially and academically when they do not have access to their phones during school hours.

If a Student violates this policy, these are the steps to take:

Syllabus

The Syllabus below illustrates the Year-at-a-Glance  MYP 3 (Math 8) . These are the units we will be covering this year. Daily objectives and homework will be posted on my website in the calendar each day. Concepts that the students will be tested on are found in each students comp book under the unit tab in the Table of Contents.
