Welcome to Mrs. Martin's Algebra class

ALGEBRA EXPECTATIONS

Welcome to 8th Grade!! I am really looking forward to getting to know you this school year. We are going to have a wonderful year learning math. The following expectations and guidelines should help this to be a successful year.

Algebra is a high school math course. Although you will not receive credit hours for the course, it is required in order to graduate from high school. In order to be successful, you will need to work with others in your group. Sometimes you will need to ask for help from your peers. Other times, you will need to offer suggestions to your group members. Ultimately, however, you must know the material yourself and be able to show all the steps you took to get an answer. If you do not show your work on each and every problem, it is likely that you will not get credit for your answer. In order to accomplish these goals, I will expect a lot out of you. We will learn to work together as a team, utilizing the skills and talents of each person in our class. Although much of our work will be done will be done through social distancing, I am hoping to do group work using google meet. We will need everyone to improve and work hard on their own mathematical skills in order to strengthen not only your learning, but also the abilities of the whole group. Please let me know if you are having any trouble at any point. I am more than happy to help you. If you ask for help on what you are not understanding and show your work on assignments, I am confident that all of you will succeed in algebra.

COURSE CONTENT This algebra class explores the math concepts of algebraic computations , proportional reasoning, solving algebraic equations, linear functions and inequalities, systems of equations, some geometric ideas, bivariate statistics, graphs, positive and negative exponents, polynomials, quadratics, and radicals. We will use Big Ideas and Khan as part of our curriculum.

BEHAVIOR GUIDELINES Respect others and yourself and be prepared. Do your best and show your work.

GRADING PROCEDURES You will receive two grades in algebra, one for your content knowledge (how well you understand and can do the mathematics) and one for your work habits (the effort you give in your assignments in the class and at home). 80% Content Knowledge (Assessments, Khan Academy, Homework, and Classwork) 20% Work Habits ( Drake Way Classroom Expectations**)

**Homework: Your homework assignments are a way to practice on your own the mathematics we learn in class. It is expected that you attempt each problem. If you are completely stuck on an assignment or problem, please email me and I will set up a time for us to meet on Google Meet or Zoom. You may work with your family members or friends to complete a problem or assignment, but each student should turn in his or her own work. Drake Middle School will be followed. Late work will be accepted under certain circumstances. Late work will be accepted for 20% less than the grade the student earns for accuracy up to one week after our unit test.

ABSENCES YOU are responsible for ALL missed work. Check the google calendar determine which homework assignments you missed and check the grade book for any missing assignments. You have two days for every day you are absent to complete your absent work. If you have any questions regarding an assignment, please email me.

If you are handing in absent or late work, complete the assignment, then go into the link on the google classroom and fill out the form for that assignment once.
