There is nothing more refreshing than sitting on the floor after a long day. As a matter of fact, rather than just being something relaxing that people do when they come home from places such as work, it also is beneficial to your health.
How could you possibly benefit from simply just sitting on your floor? Time article, The Surprising Benefits of Sitting on the Floor Everyday, touches on the impact floor time has on our health. According to Kelly and Juliet Starrett, our bodies do better in floor based positions, rather than sitting in chairs. Chairs cause issues surrounding your pelvis, thigh-bones, and hip joints, where the floor is better to have them act as they were intended, reducing any discomfort one may feel from a chair. Floor time also happens to play a part in how long one may live for. The Starretts touch on a study in which one’s “inability to get up and down off the floor without assistance” can impact their risk of death. By being able to get up and down with ease, one’s overall health is highlighted, as well as the likelihood to have a debilitating fall. With these aspects of floor time, the Starretts explain that the goal should be to sit on the floor for at least 30 cumulative minutes a day. Sitting on the floor is one of the smaller steps one can take in order to help their bodies feel better.
As someone who sits on the floor almost every day, I find it to be personally beneficial, in more ways than just the physical aspect. I struggle a lot with sitting down and getting the simple task of homework done, and part of that is caused from being uncomfortable. If my mind is on anything other than the task at hand, it becomes significantly harder for me to find the motivation to get it done. When I sit down at my desk, my back is always in pain, which makes me less inclined to get any work done. More often than not, I move to my floor and I find that I am much more productive, partly because I am more comfortable, but also because I have noticed I’m less likely to get distracted. While there is the physical aspect to floor time, I overall just feel more efficient.
The idea that there is something as small as sitting on your floor each day that can improve your overall health highlights, the simplicity of incorporating a chance to take a step back and help both your mentality and physical wellbeing.
