Adhesives
Magic eraser sponges consist of melamine. Melamine nitrogen groups typically act as nucleophiles towards C=C or C=O double bonds. The binding mechanism of cyanoacrylates to each other works in a similar fashion. While superglue typically requires alternative weak nucleophiles to start crosslinking (E.G water from the air), this process occurs faster when using melamine because it is packed with these nucleophilic groups. The reaction occurs so fast that everything heats up.
There should be no gases released from the reaction itself, however superglue cyanoacrylates are toxic by themselves. The increased heat causes them to evaporate and these fumes are toxic, as you would expect from superglue anyways.
We chose this Adhesive due to the melamine foam heating up and melting when using fast-curing adhesives such as super glue so we chose this slow-cure adhesive that doesn't create the same issues as super glue but does take a lot longer to set.
