Middlebury College and UNC-Chapel Hill have been studying the costs and benefits of gap years and the evidence shows a gap year can be a great option for a young adult! The rule of thumb is that it should be a year ON, not a year OFF, so kids should develop an interesting plan that may include work, travel, study, service, earning a certificate, etc. We also recommend students apply to college during their senior year and then ask for a deferment...it makes it easier to accomplish the application process after high school.
