Membership in NEHS is by invitation, extended through a local chapter on behalf of the national organization for juniors and seniors in high school. Membership in NEHS is an honor bestowed on individuals selected for their accomplishments in the field of English and in overall academic achievement.
The NEHS Constitution sets forth as minimum requirements for active membership the following:
junior/senior status;
the achievement of a minimum overall and English grade point average of a 3.0 prior to induction as members;
demonstrate enthusiasm for language arts (as evidenced by student application); and
one-time $20.00 induction fee (that goes toward the national organization’s programs).
These criteria may be raised, but not lowered, by the local chapter, but criteria must be based on demonstrable academic achievement; however, chapters may also consider recommendations, character, or letters of interest. It is very important that membership expectations be delineated in chapter bylaws that are made known to students, faculty, and parents/guardians.
Basic Requirements for Maintaining Annual Membership:
attend all monthly NEHS meetings (at Bear Creek High School);
log at least 6 hours of NEHS activity participation (per year);
submit work to at least 1 writing contest/scholarship/publication (per year);
participate in at least 1 service project (per year);
maintain a B (or higher) average in English classes; and
maintain a 3.0 overall GPA.
Membership is an honor bestowed on students selected for their accomplishments in the field of English and in overall academic achievement. NEHS provides recognition for past achievement, the nurturing of present interests, and encouragement for future success. NEHS is the organization for students who have experienced the power of literature, the pleasures of good writing, and the excitement of language studies. For these students NEHS provides:
national recognition for outstanding achievements;
scholarships;
enlightened involvement in the English experience, especially through nonclassroom participation;
distinction on college and job applications;
opportunities to develop leadership skills;
publication opportunities; and
a means to link with other students, locally and nationally, who share similar interests.
