Mrs. Bonzer's 2nd Grade

Thank you for visiting Mrs. Bonzer's Classroom page.  I look forward to collaborating with you to make this a great year.  Throughout this year I will have many opportunities to learn about you and our 2nd graders through classroom interactions, the Star Student Poster, Circle Time, and our Classroom Pet Journal.   Here are some notes about me to help us get acquainted:

*I have taught in Jeffco Public Schools for 27 years.  I have experience teaching Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade,

*I have a degree in Elementary Education and a Master's degree in Curriclum and Instruction.  I am also OG (Orton Gillingham) trained.

*Teaching brings me joy because I get to see my students explore, collaborate, and practice kindness as they engage with others.

*I live in Mount Vernon and love to run, hike, and walk through the trails with my husband (Terry), son (Taylor), daughter (Maylin), and my dog (Chance).

Classroom Norms

Attendance: The school day begins at 7:50 am and ends at 2:35 pm. On time arrival allows our class to make the best use of every moment of the school day. School policy requires all students who arrive after 7:50am to get a tardy slip from the front office. Please notify both myself and the office of upcoming absences.

Birthdays: We love to make students feel special on their birthdays! Our class will create a thoughtful gift from everyone juft for your child.

Parties: We will have class and holiday parties throughout the school year. You will be notified through the bi-weekly newsletter and school messenger. Families are welcome to bring food in for the parties; however, they must adhere to the District Wellness Policy. A short list of acceptable foods are fruits, veggies, crackers, cheese, and popcorn. Please see the district website for more details.

Nut-Free Classroom: Due to students’ severe nut allergies, we are a nut-free classroom. Please do not send nuts to school for lunch or party treats.

Classroom Seating: Students have assigned table seats. However, students may be moved to better accommodate their learning needs.

Restroom: Students may use the restroom during independent work time, transitions, lunch, and recess. Only one student may be out of the room at a time. Students must get permission to use the restroom. If the teacher is working with a small group, the student may walk over, hold up the sign, and wait for a silent thumbs up from the teacher to go. Students must place the bathroom pass on his or her desk. Students must walk straight to the restroom, use the restroom, wash their hands, and walk straight back to class.

Water: Students may have closed top water bottles at their seats.

Snack: Healthy please! Please send one for the morning snack.  Please consider if the snack provided can be independently opened and consumed (i.e. please don't send an orange that your student will need help peeling). If the snack requires a fork or spoon, please send one. The simpler the better!

Classroom Management

We are a collaborative and kind classroom.   Rules are general agreements to guide us in how we respectfully interract and learn.

Classroom Rules: We have 5 classroom rules. These rules are developed in order to make sure students are safe and able to learn.

Voice Level Rules:

We have 5 classroom voice levels. Each part of the day has a designated voice level. The voice levels are meant to build self regulation skills and to ensure a productive learning environment.

Voice Level 0- no voices

Voice Level 1- whisper voices

Voice Level 2- low voices/partner voices

Voice Level 3- presentation voices

Voice Level 4- recess voices

Class Chime: When the teacher hits the chime and ask for focus, this is an important time to put on listening ears and eagle eyes to focus on the instructions being given.

Individual

Students will recieve positive reinforcements through CLIMB tickets when they are respectful and supportive of our learning environment.  The CLIMB tickets can be used to purchase treasures from the treasure box at the end of each week.

Whole Class

We work together to help each other grow and improve in our academic and social skills.  We also work to keep our classroom clean and safe for learning.  When we consistently accomplish this, we earn a classroom celebration. The class will get to vote on how we will celebrate together.  This will encourage us to be a strong classroom community.

Consequences: If a student is struggling to follow classroom rules, routines, and procedures, the following will occur:

1st/2nd time- redirection/reminder of rules

3rd time- in-class break (Calm Down Station)

4th time- in-class break w/ teacher-student behavior refocus.  The Refocus Form will be sent home and I will send an email to begin communication on how to best assist student with making better choices.

*Behavior that puts student safety at risk will be directed to the office

I believe in restorative practices. It is important that students not only understand what we do or do not do something, but also why. Rather than punish, I focus on helping the student remediate the situation and learn from it.

Classroom Wish List:  Thank you for supporting our classroom with needed materials.
