Chromebooks are the devices your child will be using most often while at school. If you want to replicate this experience for them at home, they are a great option for a device. Here are a few important items to know about Chromebooks.
With a Chromebook, very little information is stored on the device itself. Instead, lightweight programs called Extensions can be attached to a unique account. When you install an extension on one device, that extension will also be automatically installed on any other Chromebook that you use with that account.
Your student has a Google account provided by Jefferson City Schools. This account has specific access restrictions based on their grade. For example; students at Jefferson Elementary School can only send and receive emails from other @jeffcityschools users. Students at Jefferson High School can send email outside our "domain." This account also comes bundled with unlimited storage, and the ability to migrate all files to a personal Google account upon graduation or transfer from Jefferson City Schools.
If you have a personal Chromebook for your child, and you want them to have the exact same experience they will have at school, then they can log in to the Chromebook with their @jeffcityschools account. This will automatically connect them to all of their Google Apps for Education (Classroom, Docs, Slides, Drive), as well as provide them with filtering similar to what they would receive at school through GoGuardian.
You can also create a private Google account for your student that can be managed with Google Family Link. There are currently restrictions with Family Link on what students can install. For example, an account using Family Link has no access to the Chrome Web Store, where students can download and install extensions and apps.
