Quizzes

Moodle allows the user to create a quiz using his/her own questions. Users can create multiple different types of questions: multiple choice, true false, matching, essay, short answer, and numerical.

Creating a Quiz in Moodle

1. In the main block of Moodle, choose Add an activity. Select Quiz.

2. A new window will open. Input the new parameters for the quiz.

  • Input name of quiz.

  • Choose window of time for students to access the quiz.

  • Set time limits on quiz if desired.

  • Choose # of attempts on the quiz.

  • Adaptive mode allows teacher to adjust grading. For example, on the second attempt of a question students earn partial credit instead of full credit.

  • Choose “Save and return to course”

3. In the main block of Moodle, click on the quiz that was just created.

4. A new window will open. This window allows the user to create questions to build the quiz.

  • Choose the question type from the drop down menu by “Create new question.”

  • A new window will open.

  • Input name of the question.

  • Directly below the Name Field is the text field for the question. In this space, users will compose the question. Users can insert pictures or just use text.

  • Default question grade is set as 1. This means if the student answers correctly they earn 1 point.

  • Penalty fact is set at .1. This means if a student gets it right the second time they lose .1 points from the total value. If a student gets it right the third time they lose .2 points from the total value and so on.

  • For multiple‐choice questions, the next fields let the user define the answer choices. For the correct answer, the user needs to assign a grade of 100%.

  • For numerical questions, the next field allows the user to set the answer and the acceptable range for the correct answer, mark 100% for correct answer.

  • The last fields on this page allow the user to send feedback to the students based on their performance on the question.

  • Choose “Save changes”.

  • Repeat this process until all of the questions are written.

5. The newly created questions are now stored in the user's Moodle question bank. Users can create subcategories and sort questions by changing where they are saved, or leave them in the main question bank.

To move the questions, select the questions, then click the dropdown menu under “With selected:” and choose where the questions should be stored. Then click the button, “Move to >>”.

6. The next step is to add the questions to the quiz.

  • Users can add questions individually by clicking on the double arrows (<<) pointing to the left. Users can also remove questions individually by clicking on the double arrows pointing to the right (>>).

  • User can add multiple questions by checking the boxes next to the question names. Once all the questions are selected by checking the boxes, select the “Add to quiz” button.

  • Once the user has selected all of the questions, choose “Save changes”.

d. Users may want to preview the quiz. Choose “Preview” in the tool bar at the top of the Moodle page.

e. Users will want to take the quiz and then choose, “Submit all and finish.” Double check and make sure your answers are correct.

Quiz Setting - One Attempt, No Scores/Results

Use these settings to create a quiz that can only be attempted once. No scores or results will be given to students.
