Inserting Videos into Moodle Courses

There are four ways to use videos within a Moodle course. Be aware that if the host site changes the filing location of the video, then the video link or embedded video will be broken. Teachers should intermittently check their Moodle pages and content within to be sure they are working.

Add Video as Web Link

When the link is clicked on, it will then take the user to the original site to view the video. Be aware that if the host site changes the filing location of the video, then the link will be broken. Teachers should intermittently check their web links to be sure they are viable.

  1. Click on the “Add a resource...” drop‐down menu.

  2. Choose “Link to a file or web site”.

  3. Enter a name for the link.

  4. Enter the web address into the Location field

  5. Under Window, choose “New Window”.

  6. Choose Save button.

The video is shown as a clickable web link to the host site.

Add Video to a Moodle Web Page

When the link is clicked on, it will open a new page in Moodle. The video will be embedded on the page.

1. First, the embedded code will need to be copied from the host site. To do that, most video hosting sites have a “Share” button or an “Embed” button. Look for the Embed option and choose it to Copy.

2. Click on “Add a resource” drop‐down menu.

3. Choose “Compose a web page”.

4. Enter a name for the link.

5. In the web page text box, enter any text wanted before or after the video.

6. Switch the editing mode to HTML code by clicking on the HTML icon (circled in figure).

7. Then, place cursor where the video is to be inserted (on a blank line). Choose PASTE to place the code on the page.

8. Under Window, choose “New Window”.

9. Choose Save button.

Add Video Onto a Topic Summary Page

The video will display on the main Moodle page under the Topic Summary sections.

1. First, the embedded code will need to be copied from the host site. To do that, most video hosting sites have a “Share” button or an “Embed” button. Look for the Embed option and choose it to Copy.

2. Click on paper/pencil edit icon in the Topic section.

3. In the Summary text box, enter any text wanted before or after the video.

4. Switch the editing mode to HTML code by clicking on the HTML icon (circled in figure).

5. Then, place cursor where the video is to be inserted (on a blank line). Choose PASTE to place the code on the page.

6. Choose Save button.

Add Video as an Uploaded File to Moodle

When the link is clicked on, it will then take the user to a new browser window to play the video. Videos uploaded to the Moodle course will be available for viewing and not subject to broken link issues (when linking to a website for the video).

1. Click on “Add a resource” drop‐down menu.

2. Choose "Link to a file or web site."

3. Enter a name for the link.

4. Click on “Choose or upload a file” button from the Link to a File or Website section.

5. Under the list of course files, choose the “Upload a File” button.

6. Browse to locate the file on the computer. Choose the file and then Open.

7. The video filename should be listed in the field, then choose the “Upload this file” button.

8. In the list of course files, checkmark the video file, then click on "Choose" to the right of the file.

9. Under Window, choose “New Window.”

10. Choose Save button.

The video is shown as a clickable link to open the video in a new browser window.
