How to Use Advanced Search in New Outlook (2022)

If you are using the newest version of Microsoft Outlook on PC, you've probably noticed that the search bar has changed slightly in appearance and function. While it is not possible to revert to the old search bar, there are some steps you can take to make it easier to use.

When you first load Outlook, you'll see that the Search bar has moved locations and is now in the blue bar at the top of the screen.

When you click into the Search bar, the default options are to search the Current Mailbox for any content matching your search term.

However, this may not be the correct setting to locate the email you are looking for.

To change the search location, click the dropdown arrow to the right of "Current Mailbox." You can change your search location to:

  • Current Folder

  • Subfolders

  • Current Mailbox

  • All Outlook Items

I recommend changing this to All Outlook Items in order to be able to search all of your emails at once.

If you click on the dropdown arrow on the right-hand side of the search bar, you will get a list of options to narrow your search. You can search by:

  • Attachments (Yes or No)

  • Attachment Contains

  • From

  • Body

  • Received (by date)

  • Subject

  • To

In this example, I am searching All Outlook Items for emails matching my name (Stefanie Dao) as the sender (the From field).

Here is the search result, showing all emails that match "stefanie dao" in the From field.
