I have learned how much effort goes into event planning in order to hold a successful event. I had to learn how to effectively communicate and play the role of messenger between several different organizations, which was extremely difficult considering the fact that their only form of contact was through me. Each organization had their own timelines and therefore could not reply in a timely manner. If I were to go back and redo this project I definitely would have wanted to find a better way of communication and advertisement. However, I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of people that had shown interest in the topic I chose.
It was challenging for me to reach out and ask for interviews because I had no previous experiences with interviewing strangers. It was a life skill I was never exposed to until now. However, post interviews, I had found myself to be intrigued with learning more about peoples’ lives. This was because the people I met during this project had answered my questions in ways that would give me glimpses of their life story and how they got to where they are now. But, my progress after interviewing individuals quickly diminished when it was time to reach out to whole organizations. In order to present what I’ve learned to the community through a public event I needed local pet organizations there to give people the experience I had gotten when learning about pet care. The process of recruiting organizations was extremely difficult because they themselves had to prioritize things happening within their own community which caused my invitation to be at the bottom of their to-do list.
In the end I learned to let my need to have everything go exactly as plan take a spot at the back burner while I focus on just getting the information to people and organizations. Once I settled into a more "go with the flow" mindset, last minute cancellations and additions to the event became easier to handle and a lot less stressful.
