My name is Gabriela Nikolavsky. Growing up as a queer person, I noticed a lack of LGBTQ+ representation, particularly in history classes. When doing research for this project, I asked the question "how can Jamesville DeWitt High School students access historical resources about queer individuals?". I had originally planned on doing a mural depicting important queer figures throughout American history, under the guidance of Mr. Brodsky, the JDHS art teacher. However, I decided on going a different route. Rather than make a mural, I decided to compile all sorts of sources on queer history and identity, with the intention of sharing it with the JD GSA (Gender and Sexuality Alliance club) as a part of their resources for queer and ally students. I spoke with Professor Stacie Brensilver Berman, who has written textbooks about how to incorporate diverse identities in teaching, and she gave me so many sources to start looking through.Â
