How Do I Pay For College?
Financial aid can be a confusing part of the college application process. Most students and families will rely on some sort of aid to finance college. Where does that aid come from and how do I get it? Financial aid includes: HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarship, HOPE Grant, Loans, and School/Community Scholarship awards.
HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarship and HOPE Grant
HOPE/Zell Miller Scholarships are merit-based, awarded when students achieve certain eligibility requirements. Students can track their eligibility on their GAFutures.org account.
HOPE: 3.0 academic GPA upon high school graduation
Zell Miller: 3.7 academic GPA and 1200 SAT score (one test administration) OR 26 ACT composite
HOPE Grant: available to students attending a technical college, must maintain 2.0 GPA in college
FAFSA
All students/families must complete the FAFSA in order to receive financial aid for college. This includes HOPE and Zell Miller Scholarship, even though those scholarships are not need-based. New applications generally open early October of each school year. FAFSA is FREE. There is no cost to students or families when completing this application. FAFSA generally should be completed by parents or guardians as it requires tax return information.

Scholarship Information is changing throughout the year. Most scholarship applications have moved to a digital platform so students are encouraged to complete applications online. However, paper copies of various scholarships (when available) can be found in the Empower Career Center. Students should also constantly check their base schools for scholarship opportunities.
