(7th & 8th Grade Math - Julian Charter School - Encinitas, CA)
Teaching middle school math along the North County coast has been an incredibly rewarding experience, but also one that requires flexibility, creativity, and strong communication with both students and families. Over time, I’ve found a few key resources that consistently support my instruction and help build a strong classroom community. These tools make math more interactive, accessible, and connected beyond the classroom.
Type: Learning Management System
What it is:
Canvas by Instructure is a platform that helps teachers organize content, assignments, grades, and communication in one place.
How I’ve used it in my classroom:
I use Canvas daily to structure my math classes so students always know what to expect. I organize modules by topic (like expressions, equations, and functions), which helps students easily navigate current and past material. I also upload guided notes, example problems, and short video explanations so students can review concepts like solving equations or graphing at their own pace. This has been especially helpful for students who need extra time or were absent.
Why it’s a must-have:
For 7th and 8th graders who are still building independence, Canvas provides consistency and clear organization. It also helps me streamline grading and give feedback efficiently.

Type: Math Exploration & Graphing Tool
What it is:
Desmos is an interactive math platform that allows students to explore concepts visually through graphing and dynamic activities.
How I’ve used it in my classroom:
Desmos has been a game changer for helping students truly see math. When teaching linear relationships, I use Desmos activities where students can adjust graphs and instantly see how slope and intercepts change. It shifts learning away from memorizing steps and toward understanding concepts. My students are noticeably more engaged when they can explore and test ideas themselves.
Why it’s a must-have:
It builds conceptual understanding and encourages student discussion. It’s especially effective for middle schoolers who benefit from visual and interactive learning experiences.

Type: Family Communication Tool
What it is:
ParentSquare is a communication platform that connects teachers, families, and students through messages, announcements, and updates.
How I’ve used it in my classroom:
I use ParentSquare to send weekly updates about what we’re learning, upcoming assessments, and ways families can support their students at home. I’ve also used it to share reminders and celebrate class achievements. Having a consistent communication routine has helped build stronger relationships with families and reduced confusion about assignments and expectations.
Why it’s a must-have:
Strong family communication is essential at the middle school level. ParentSquare makes it easy to keep everyone informed and involved, which ultimately supports student success.

As I continue teaching in Encinitas, I’m excited to keep refining how I use these tools and finding new ways to make math meaningful and accessible for all students.
