7th/8th grade band at Scotts Creek takes place every day during school for the student's enrichment period. We have plenty of opportunities throughout the school year for performance, which include but are not limited to:
*March with the Mustangs(Middle School Band Night at SMHS)
*December PTA concert
*Pep Rallies
*Middle School Band Day with all JCPS 7th/8th grade band members across the county
*Thanksgiving Luncheon
And more!
Students will need a few items everyday to be successful at school. They are:
*Their instrument(instrumental rental information below)
-Clarinets and Saxophones will need size 2.5(or higher) reeds for their instrument. Oboes will also need reeds.
*"Habits of a Successful Middle School Musician" book for their instrument(links below)
*Band binder and music(provided by the school)
*Pencil
Students will have a weekly playing check in which will be for a grade. This is to make sure students are practicing outside of the classroom and putting forth their best effort. Students are expected to practice at least 15 minutes a day at home Monday-Thursday.
Students in 7th/8th Grade Band can interview for a leadership position in our band program. The leadership positions are as follows:
Section Leader-leads their section and helps others learn their music
Teacher Assistant-helps Mrs. Umphlett with copies, the music library, and more
Communications Team-creates posters for events, maintains website, etc.
Master Organizer-Keeps the place looking spotless and let's Mrs. Umphlett know of anything needs for the classroom(will also assemble a team of students to work with them)
Interviews will take place within the first month of school.
Students have a few options for instrument rental.
They can rent from Scotts Creek for a $40 yearly fee. However, instruments are limited and are on a first come, first serve basis.
They can rent from a local instrumental rental shop. The two that are local to WNC are Stone Cottage in Waynesville or Music and Arts in Asheville, NC
