PS 16 honors Dr. Norma Fernandez

Many students worked together in the Book Den and in Ms. Gordon's ATC class to commemorate our very own, Dr. Norma Fernandez for Hispanic Heritage month.  Students' work was compiled into a book dedicated to Jersey City's  first female Latina superintendent.

Dr. Fernandez was so taken aback she wanted to come and thank the students personally for their hard work and creativity!  Hence, our first ever Afternoon Tea!  Check out the book below and the transformation of the main Library!

Japan Day performance at City Hall

Our students were invited to sing at City Hall for the annual Japan Day Flag Raising/Proclamation.  The event took place on Friday, November 3, 2023.  They were fantastic!  See for yourself!  Thanks Dr. Manes!

Diwali at PS 16

On November 14, the first grade children of 107A celebrated Diwali, the festival of lights. The children learned about the story of Diwali through a short animated video and then read a book on how Diwali is celebrated. The children were curious to learn about a new cultural festival and some of them shared how they celebrated Diwali at home or with their friends. In keeping with the spirit of Diwali, the children colored a rangoli and a diya and made them sparkle with gemstones and their creativity. The children wished each other a Happy Diwali and for the light to always shine within us.

First Grade Students from Ms.Vittal's Class, Room 105A had fun celebrating Diwali, a hindu festival of lights; which represents the triumph of good over evil.  Class parents, Mrs. Mehta and Mrs. Parkar volunteered their time by conducting fun crafts like decorating lamps and making paper lanterns. Mrs. Mehta also read a book about Diwali. The celebrations concluded with a dance for the the song "Happy Diwali"!

Happy Diwali from Ms. Nicholas and Mrs. Tapia's Kindergarten class!

🍂Thanksgiving 🍂

"What if, today, we were grateful for everything?" –Charlie Brown

Check out these fabulous balloons

from PS 16's 3rd Annual Thanksgiving Day

parade!!!

Ms. Cheatham's 1st graders (107A) began their day by participating in the Thanksgiving Balloon Parade around the block with four parent volunteers. The streets were filled with smiles as each child proudly held up their creation. The parade was a sea of colors and a great success. After returning to the classroom and having lunch/snacks, they moved onto our Thanksgiving arts and craft project consisting of making bookmarks. Each child had a packet that included stickers, pompoms, and googly eyes to use for decoration. The children used their fine motor skills and imagination to create their very own one-of-a-kind bookmark.  Afterwards, they ended the day by playing two fun Thanksgiving games. The first game encouraged teamwork and listening skills while the second called for the students to reflect on things they were thankful for in life. It was a fantastic day for all!

Grateful for moments like these with our fifth graders, surrounded by friends and a feast fit for a king. 🍁🦃

Giving thanks continues with Mrs. Gauch's second graders
