Our Oshōgatsu will feature live entertainment by Duo YUMENO. New York based koto / shamisen player and singer Yoko Reikano Kimura and cellist create a singular fusion sound, inspired by tradition but with a contemporary sensibility. . A proponent of new music, the duo has commissioned works that explore the dialogue between classical Japanese and western music. The New York Classical Review praised, "the duo played with precision and deep feeling." They were awarded the Chamber Music America Classical Commissioning Program grant and received the Aoyama Music Award. They have been actively presenting their cross-cultural programs throughout the world and have performed at venues such as Carnegie Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center, University of Cambridge and World Heritage Sites such as Ryōan-ji Temple. Their activities have been featured in the media, like the New York Times, the Japan Times and Chamber Music Magazine. The duo’s latest album, Heike Quinto (composed by Daron Hagen) was recently released worldwide by the Naxos label.
We will hold our traditional mochitsuki 餅付き, during which attendees can take turns pounding hot cooked rice in a wooden usu using a kine (mallet). Our thanks to the Greenwich Japanese School, which for years has loaned us their usu and kine for this event.
