Oshogatsu 2024
JSFC held its 2024 Oshogatsu celebration on Saturday, January 13 at the Rowayton Community Center.
We enjoyed beautiful bentos from Pink Sumo of Westport.
Junko Fisher danced a Ryukyuan Court Dance, a Japanese classical dance, and an Okinawan popular dance. Accompanying herself on the Okinawan Sanshin and the Japanese Shamisen, she sang several songs, and explained the differences between the instruments.
We held our traditional mochitsuki 餅付き, during which attendees took turns pounding hot cooked rice in a wooden usu using a kine (mallet). Our thanks to the Greenwich Japanese School, which for years has loaned us their usu and kine for this event. Volunteers helped with the kitchen preparation, rounde the hot mochi balls, and distributed the mochi (served with kinako and azuki red bean paste.
We also held a raffle, and a silent auction.
