We held our traditional mochitsuki 餅付き, during which attendees could take turns pounding hot cooked rice in a wooden usu using a kine (mallet). Our thanks to the Greenwich Japanese School, which for years has loaned us their usu and kine for this event.
Mochitsuki leader Michiyo Seto taught Julius Alexander and Ray Stephens how to turn the hot rice. Masami Morimoto is the rice pounder.
Ray Stephens turns the rice as Robyn Mortiboys pounds.
(right to left) Yoko Kawai and Ginny Waters rounded the hot mochi balls, Shizue Pleasanton and Nancy Beck added kinako(roasted soy flour), azuki red bean paste, and nori (black seaweed), while Diane Barton distributed the mochi.
