The NICE Festival was established to celebrate the rich global heritage and culture of the people of the Norwalk area. The NICE Festival featured dancers, musicians, food and craft vendors from multiple traditions and customs.
The OCAFC (Organization of Chinese Americans of Fairfield County) generously invited JSFC to join them at their tent at the Norwalk International Cultural Exchange (NICE) festival on Saturday, July 9. Together we showed a united Asian community.
OCAFC had a game in which the participant spun a wheel to get a number. The number corresponded to a question about Asia, which the participant was challenged to answer, so it was fun and educational. For taking part in the game they received a Yellow whistle. The whistle is a symbol of self-protection and solidarity in our common fight against historical discrimination, anti-Asian violence, and racial profiling.
JSFC presented a Tanabata (star festival) activity. Tanabata was July 7, and has its roots in the Chinese Qixi Festival. The inspiration for Tanabata was the story of "the weaver girl and the cowherd". You can find a Youtube video of the story HERE, and more about the festival at https://livejapan.com/en/article-a0001333/ We followed the popular Tanabata custom of writing wishes on small strips of paper and hanging them from a bamboo branch.
We also had a game in which children were encouraged to use chopsticks to pick up Japanese treats, which were donated by Maruichi of Stamford, one of our Corporate Supporters.
Maruichi recently opened a new branch at 191 Summer Street in Stamford. For more about it, see this Stamford advocate article.

Children were helped to make origami. Totoro and Pikachu were especially popular.
The weather was perfect, and we had traffic throughout the day until 7 PM.
