The Japan Society of Fairfield County is delighted to invite you to a special cultural program at Yale University: a private guided tour of the Beinecke Rare Book & Manuscript Library and its current exhibition, Textured Stories: Chirimen Books of Modern Japan.
This unique experience will be led by Haruko Nakamura, a distinguished scholar of Japanese history whose research brings to life the cultural and material richness of Japan’s past. Under her guidance, we will explore the world of chirimen-bon—beautifully crafted crepe-paper books produced in the late 19th and early 20th centuries for both Japanese and international audiences. These rare works are treasured not only for their literary content, but also for their tactile quality, vivid illustrations, and role in shaping cross-cultural exchange during a pivotal moment in Japan’s modernization.
