Mid-Unit and End-of-Unit Assessments (Tests) will primarily determine grades for the standards on report cards.
Pop Quizzes and Check-In Quizzes will periodically measure progress with the concepts and skills for upcoming assessments. Although the mid-unit and end-of-unit assessments must be done without reference material, students may use anything in their notebooks or binders during a quiz. It is wise to place a post-it flag or note by any information looked up during a quiz as a reminder to study it before the test. Quizzes also count toward report card grades, but not as much as Assessments / Tests.
Bonus questions occasionally appear on assessments. Correctly answering the bonus question(s) with sufficient work will raise the score on that standard by 0.5. If a bonus raised a student’s score, Infinite Campus will show the final score unless it would be a 4.5, in which case Infinite Campus will only display the maximum standards-based grade of 4. However, a note will be made with the score in Infinite Campus that the student had a 4 plus correctly answered the bonus.
Warm ups, exploration activities, and practice problems are done for developing skills rather than assessing mastery. This includes DeltaMath, Assistments, Desmos, Blooket, GimKit, and Khan Academy assignments as well as hands-on activities and worksheets. These scores are entered into Infinite Campus but do not impact report cards or honor roll. Don't worry about scores of "1.5," "2," or "2.5" in this category, as these simply communicate in-progress performance on standards. However, assignment scores of "1" or missing work will impact eligibility for extracurricular activities and special activities like the every-other-Friday rewards recesses.
With accelerated math work, the standards-based grading scale will be applied as follows:
4 - Perfect or potentially one little error (e.g. 2+3=4) not relevant to the standard being assessed.
3.5 - Small errors not impacting demonstration of overall proficiency; otherwise, work is correct.
3 - Demonstrated full competency on the standard across the "big picture" of the assessment. May have made minor errors on components of the assessed standard in one or two problems, but work done for similar problems on the assessment demonstrates mastery.
2.5 - Almost there! Mostly but not completely met the standard.
2 - Showed partial knowledge and skills on the standard.
1.5 - Demonstrated a little knowledge of the skill with significant gaps.
1 - Work on the assessment showed that the student has minimal or no understanding of the concepts assessed.
0 - Did not attempt assessment.
Students may reassess on any quiz or test where they wish to earn a higher score. Reassessments should be done during study hall or before/after school, not during class time. If the original score was a 2.5 or lower, the student must show that they are prepared to reassess by working with Mrs. Sandlin to review or getting a signed note or an e-mail from a parent/guardian, Academic Support Center Teacher, or study hall supervisor. Due to the pace and amount of content covered in the accelerated course, there are some variations from the general middle school policies and procedures for reassessment:
Due to the pace of accelerated math, students may request additional time beyond the standard two weeks to prepare for reassessment.
Students may reassess multiple times on standards in order to achieve their desired grades. Additional practice work may be required prior to attempting a reassessment to ensure readiness.
