Overview

The 3T Summit: Teaching, Textbooks, and Technology is a one-day, face-to-face event exploring the role of these three areas in English language teaching (ELT). Participants will explore how to effectively utilize both digital tools and traditional methods to support language learning. Sessions will highlight classroom applications, AI integration, pedagogical theory, and reflective practice. The event also features opportunities for textbook authors and IT developers to showcase and present their work, offering valuable resources and insights for teachers looking for new materials for their classrooms. Sponsors may have sample textbooks and trial access to their products.

3Tサミット：教育・教科書・テクノロジーは、英語教育におけるこれら三つの分野の役割を探る、対面形式の一日限りのイベントである。英語教育における言語習得を支援するために、デジタルツールと従来の指導法の両方をいかに効果的に活用できるかを参加者とともに探求することを目的とする。

本イベントでは、教室での実践例、AIの活用、教育理論、リフレクティブ・プラクティス（省察的実践）などに焦点を当てたセッションを実施する。さらに、教科書の著者やIT開発者が自身の教材や製品を紹介・発表する機会も設け、新たな教材を探している教師にとって、有益な情報やリソースを得られる場となることを想定して開催する。

また、協賛企業は教科書サンプルや製品の試用アクセスの提供を予定している。

The first-ever 3T Summit was held at Kindai University’s Higashiosaka Campus on November 30th. The gathering, meant to highlight the eponymous three T’s (Teaching, Textbooks, and Technology), drew participants from all over Japan. With over fifty presenters, 13 sponsors, a lively panel discussion, and some top-notch banh mi sandwiches courtesy of local eatery Em Oi, the event had something for everyone. Though it was a brand-new conference with many moving parts, things moved with surprising smoothness...

Summary of the 3T Summit Forum: The Future of ELT with the Advent of AI (2025)

The session opened with remarks from John Carle, who introduced the theme and the panel. Moderator Rachel Patterson led a short warm-up activity that asked attendees how they currently use AI, what concerns them, and what excites them. Early audience comments highlighted the speed and convenience of AI, concerns about authenticity of student work, and uncertainty about how to verify AI-generated assignments.

The panel discussion began with each speaker outlining their background and general stance on AI. All three described themselves as active users but not “experts,” emphasizing hands-on experience. The early part of the discussion focused on observed classroom behaviors. Panelists noted that students often rely on AI to complete tasks quickly and sometimes overtrust the accuracy of outputs. Concerns included the difficulty of detecting AI-generated writing, the temptation for students to avoid doing foundational work, and the risk that low-proficiency or less confident learners may feel compelled to use AI simply to keep up. At the same time, panelists acknowledged positive uses, including clarification of difficult concepts, creation of examples, and support for learners who are embarrassed to seek help.

When asked how to integrate AI meaningfully, the panel emphasized designing assignments that require process rather than product. Suggestions included using in-class handwritten samples to establish baselines, requiring students to compare their own drafts with AI-generated alternatives, and structuring writing cycles that alternate between human output and AI-supported revision. Eric Hawkinson discussed how different information-seeking systems (library catalogs, search engines, large language models) distribute the cognitive load differently, and how teachers can shape tasks to keep the “heavy lifting” on the learner. Panelists agreed that teachers should actively teach AI literacy rather than simply banning tools.

The discussion of second-language acquisition produced mixed views. Michelle Nemoto noted that AI can scaffold vocabulary and structure when students use it deliberately, but that blind reliance reduces learning. Bill White described classroom routines that force students to internalize language before typing or revising with AI. Eric Hawkinson referenced emerging neuroscience research suggesting that LLM-assisted writing may reduce cognitive activation compared with pen-and-paper work, underscoring the importance of designing tasks that preserve deeper thinking.

On the ethical and pedagogical challenges ahead, panelists cited uneven institutional policies, unrealistic administrative expectations about AI’s “efficiency,” and the likelihood of increased workload for teachers as they monitor individual learning processes. Hawkinson warned that future developments such as agentic AI and multimodal robotics will introduce new disruptions. The need for transparency, adaptable frameworks, and sustained teacher training was emphasized. A final audience comment argued that what teachers interpret as laziness may reflect students’ own critical judgment that certain assignments lack value, and that AI makes this clearer.

The forum closed with reflections on maintaining critical thinking, keeping classroom tasks meaningful, and focusing on human roles that AI cannot replace, such as judgment, empathy, and supporting student agency. Rachel Patterson summarized these themes before turning the session back to the conference organizers.

Walk from Nagase Station

Closest station is Nagase (長瀬駅) Station on the Kintetsu Osaka Line (近鉄大坂線). Easy access from Tsuruhashi Station (鶴橋駅) on the Osaka Loop line (大阪環状線 ).

It is a 10-minute walk east from Nagase Station to the West Gate of the Main Campus, and then another 5 min walk through the main campus to Building G, on the E-Campus (Total 15-minute walk).

Taxi is not recommended from this station.

Walk from Yaenosato Station

The other closest station is Yaenosato (八戸ノ里駅) Station on the Kintetsu Nara Line (近鉄奈良線). Easy access from Tsuruhashi Station (鶴橋駅) on the Osaka Loop line (大阪環状線 ). It is a 15-minute walk south from Yaenosato Station to the venue (Building G, E-Campus).

There is no Kindai express bus from Yaenosato on Sundays.
Taxi would be a few minutes.
