Art Program Overview
Kindergarten to Second Grade
Kindergarten to Second Grade
The JA primary art program consists of four main components:
Students will learn about the seven Elements of Art
They will explore these elements as they learn about and are inspired by artists and art movements of the past and of today
Students will be exposed to big ideas in our society and across the world
As artists, they will develop the ability to evaluate their own art, as well as the art of others
Young artists experience making art through “process, not product”. Art making in this manner, helps students to find their creative voice through imaginative ideation, self-expression, and autonomy. The creativity children develop in the art room expands to affect all other aspects of their lives, including becoming successful citizens, as well as lifelong learners.
Keeping this in mind, some of this artwork children create is not necessarily meant for exhibition. Play and experimentation are essential to creative development and confidence in risk-taking. Process is valued over product to cultivate an environment that supports creativity.
Studio Habits of Mind (SHoM)
The following studio habits are used as guidelines for artistic discovery and growth:
● Develop Craft ● Engage and Persist ● Envision ● Express
● Observe ● Stretch and Explore ● Reflect ● Connect (Understand Art Worlds)

A special thank you to art teachers Lauren Gould-Donohue and Jen Ferreri for kindly sharing with me their format for this.
