Third to Sixth Grade
Through the years, our artists have created amazing pieces, have learned new techniques, have made friends, and - most importantly - gained confidence in their artistic abilities.
Art Hodgepodge was a success! Not only did we make amazing creations, we built new friendships too! The first project our young artists explored was paper marbling. Students tried two forms of marbling: a traditional Japanese technique called Suminagashi and a more unconventional technique using shaving cream. Artists compared these two processes and their colorful effects. Next, artists painted canvas bags with the designs of their choice including colorful gradients, geometric patterns and abstract designs. During our last session, artists made jewelry using a variety of materials. Glass bead earrings and necklaces, Shrinky Dink earrings and ceramic pendant necklaces were all part of the creative fun.
Nothing seems to excite students more than ceramic projects! Students in this month's art club designed, sculpted and painted a fairy or gnome house. Artists began with a sketch of their design and then created a paper model of their structure. Many artists realized and corrected flaws in their designs at this point. During the next section, artists used their paper templates to cut slabs of clay. Students used scoring and slip to attach pieces together and then added additional embellishments and textures. During our last session, artists creatively painted their structures and display boards.
Inspired by Chris Uphues, artists created an expressive heart stuffie or a design of their choice. After making a paper pattern, students cut their felt fabric and attached pieces to the front. Students used a running stitch to attach the front and back pieces together and stuffed their creations. For many students, this was their first sewing experience! Most students also had to overcome challenges along the way. I'm so proud of the way students exercised a growth mindset as they created such successful projects!
January 2023
One of the most peaceful art clubs that I've hosted, the weaving club has been an absolute delight! Artists selected from a variety of looms and planned a special design for a satchel. While we're still hard at work with our weaving, the results will undoubtedly be beautiful!
December 2022
JA's young artists created original gingerbread houses for the holidays. 3rd-6th grade students began with a sketched plan including handmade templates for their 2D or 3D gingerbread house. The next couple of weeks, artists worked very diligently to construct their houses including some creative problem-solving related to collapsed roofs! Students also added cut-outs and special touches to their creations. The final club session, artists painted their gingerbread houses with the acrylic paints of their choice adding their own unique sparkle! The houses were on display as an adorable village during the month of December. Hopefully these special creations will grace tabletops and mantles for years to come!
Spooky Ceramics
Our JA artists had some creative afterschool fun in September! 3rd-6th graders learned about how to paint gradients while making a spooky haunted house! We also improved our ceramic skills while sculpting and glazing pumpkins, candy dishes and ghostly candle holders! The ceramics are in the kiln and pictures will be posted this week! Paintings and ceramics will also go on display in the hallway this week!
