The foundation stone for the ISHRAE Jadavpur University Students’ Chapter was laid with the vision that the learnings outside the classroom are equally important as our curricular work. ISHRAE JU chapter is an initiative by the students of the Mechanical Engineering Department and provides a platform for all-round development of a student through its multiple competitions, discussions and interactive events. The journey of our society to becoming a vibrant chapter has not been a cakewalk. It took several years and many hands to ensure we kept consistently submitting entries to some national level competitions like National Student Design Competition (NSDC), ISHRAE Student Project Grant (ISPG), and Aquest. Although our initial focused was on Refrigeration and Air Conditioning, as the society has traditionally been about, the COVID pandemic inspired us to think out of the box and redefine the club as a training platform for all-round development. We started hosting interactive sessions with alumni and professionals where students heard from people at pinnacles of research and leadership. We organised lectures from the cutting edge of industry and academia. Over months, the number of attendees grew and the positive response drew us in. The Alumni interaction series brought in illustrious alumni of our university in conversation with present students over a diverse number of areas. As a part of this series, we had speakers from Pennsylvania State University, IIMs', ISB, XLRI, young entrepreneurs, GATE Rankers, and so on and so forth. We also conducted multiple sessions of the Placement Insights series that focused on the nuances of Placements' process. Adding to the chain we also had a special session named Women in Engineering with a purpose to uphold women’s contribution to engineering and celebrate their achievements. Our Chapter also provided the horizon to our student members for upscaling their knowledge and presentation skills through knowledge series, where they give lucid explanations on some interesting topics.
Taking all these collective efforts to develop ourselves also paid off for us in various ways. We were awarded the 1st Runners-up position in the Best Student Chapter Award Category consecutively for the second time this year in 2022. We were also declared the Zonal Winners of the East Zone and our team shone bright as the 1st Runners-up of ISHRAE HVAC & R HACKATHON National Finals. In the National Student Design Competition (NSDC), HVAC system design competition conducted by ISHRAE one of our team bagged the 1st prize at the national level along with 3 teams getting shortlisted for Zonals. One of our team also won a major research grant by winning the ISPG competition (Grant in Aid for the Final Year Students for Project Research in HVAC & R). Going through thick and thin together as a team has been a terrific journey for us, and moulded us for greater challenges to come.
