Prof. Mitali Mondal is a Professor in the Department of Physics, Jadavpur University, and serves as the Team Leader of the Jadavpur University Group in both the ALICE–CERN Collaboration and the ALICE–India Collaboration. Her research is centered on experimental high-energy nuclear physics, with a particular focus on understanding the properties of strongly interacting matter under extreme temperature and density conditions through ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions at CERN's ALICE experiment.
Prof. Mondal has made significant contributions to the study of the Quark–Gluon Plasma (QGP), a primordial state of matter believed to have existed shortly after the Big Bang. Her current research activities include investigations of light-flavour resonances, heavy-flavour hadrons, and quarkonium production using Run 2 and Run 3 data from the ALICE experiment. She is also actively involved in detector simulation and performance studies for the Forward Calorimeter (FoCal), one of the major upgrade projects of the ALICE detector.
Alongside her work in high-energy physics, Prof. Mondal has developed a strong research programme in environmental radioactivity and radiation risk assessment. Her studies on environmental radiation levels in the hilly regions of Bankura and Purulia districts of West Bengal, as well as investigations of radon hazards in underground water systems in the Bakreswar and Tantloi geothermal regions, have contributed to a better understanding of radiation exposure and its potential environmental and public-health implications.
Prof. Mondal's research interests further extend to interdisciplinary applications of physics, particularly in the analysis of music. Her work explores the hidden geometry of sound through the study of scaling laws, fractal behaviour, and complexity in musical structures, applying concepts from statistical physics and complex systems theory to uncover patterns underlying musical compositions.
She has published 68 research papers, including 56 articles in peer-reviewed international journals and 12 papers in conference proceedings. Prof. Mondal has supervised eight doctoral scholars, of whom four have been awarded the Ph.D. degree, while four are currently pursuing their research under her guidance.
