in December of your 6th grade year, during the school day, the band directors will have the students do a listening assessment and do a short presentation about band. this assessment is not for a grade.
before the winter holidays, the 8th grade band will perform for the 6th graders in an assembly at the middle school.
Starting in January we will do instrument fittings during the school day. This provides an opportunity for students to try out instruments and decide which instruments they prefer. we ask that each student pick 3 instruments and rank their first, second, and third choices.
We try to place students on one of their top 3 instruments. we will help guide your child based on his/her musical interests, physical make-up, and instrument availability. Your child knows what he or she wants, you know your child, and we know music. Together we will find the instrument that your child will not only enjoy but will give him or her the best chance of musical success.
Students will then be assigned instruments! At this point it is important to be sure to put band on their enrollment card before turning it into their counselors.
Information regarding your primary instrument teacher, what specific instrument you need, and and any additional supplies needed will be included in the letter as well. During the summer prior to your 7th grade year there will be a one week beginner band camp to teach you how to assemble your instrument and produce your first sound!
