The Virginia Language & Literacy Screening System (VALLSS) is the state-provided screening tool for Virginia’s Early Intervention Reading Initiative (EIRI). The purpose of the EIRI is to reduce the number of children with reading problems through early diagnosis and immediate intervention. By screening K-3 students, participating school divisions determine students' level of risk (high, moderate, or low) developing reading difficulties, and receive incentive funds for providing intervention. All students in the high-risk band must receive intervention services in addition to their regular classroom instruction. All students in grades K-3 are given VALLSS. As part of the requirements set forth in the Virginia Literacy Act, the Virginia Literacy Partnerships (VLP) is expanding their suite of measures to include VALLSS: 4-8. VALLSS: 4-8 will be used to identify relative strengths and weaknesses in specific literacy skill areas, including both code-based and language comprehension skills. As the majority of students who participate in VALLSS: 4-8 are students who are already experiencing reading difficulty according to their results on the English SOL, VALLSS: 4-8 is designed to provide a better understanding of why students are experiencing difficulty, which can be used to guide instruction for improved reading outcomes. Students who did not pass the SOL test in grades 3-7 are given VALLSS in grades 4-8.

STAR Reading 2-5
Star Assessments are short tests that provide teachers with personalized learning data for each student. They are research-based and scientifically proven to help teachers guide each student on their unique path to proficiency.
Star tests are computer adaptive, which means they adjust in difficulty to each answer students provide. This helps teachers get the best data to help students in the shortest amount of testing time (about one-third of the time other tests require).
Star Assessments are not a “pass/fail” type of assessment, nor are they assessments for which students can study. Instead, Star assesses students’ early literacy, reading, and/or math ability, providing teachers with data and insights to determine which skills your child knows and which skills they are ready to learn next and identify which students may need additional support. Star data helps educators to personalize your child’s practice on the skills they need to keep them learning and growing.
The best way to prepare for Star is to simply encourage your child to do his or her best.

Standards of Learning (SOL Test) 3-5
Standards of Learning (SOL Test) 3-5
The Standards of Learning (SOL) for Virginia Public Schools establish minimum expectations for what students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade or course in English, Mathematics, Science, History, Social Science, and other subjects.
SOL tests measure students' success in meeting the Board of Education’s expectations for learning and achievement. All items on SOL tests are reviewed by Virginia classroom teachers for accuracy and fairness, and teachers also assist the Virginia Board of Education in setting proficiency standards for the tests.
