PHONICS
Phonics is a reading and spelling tool for teaching the basic relationship between letters and the sounds they make. Linking sounds with letters of the alphabet is called phonics.
Term 1 Themes
1. All About Me
Big learning starts with little people.
The All About Me theme helps children learn who they are, what they like, and how they feel. When children feel seen and valued, they become more confident learners.
2. The Solar System
The solar system is like a big family in space. There is a bright sun at the centre, and the planets, like Earth, orbit it. There are also the moon, stars, and sometimes comets. All these things move in space together, just like we move around our home.
3. Minibeast
Learning about minibeasts helps young learners develop curiosity and a love for nature as they explore small living creatures around them.
Through this theme, children learn to observe, ask questions and understand that living things need care and respect.
It also supports language development, early science skills and confidence.
4. Christmas
Christmas is a time when children may acquire vital traits such as kindness, forgiveness, and understanding. Kindness takes the form of offering something to another person, whether material or immaterial. Forgiveness in the same sense that Christmas is a pleasant season.
Term 2 Themes
People who help us
The theme “People Who Help Us” is extremely important in early years education. It introduces young children to the roles of key community members and helps them understand how society functions, while also fostering empathy, respect, and a sense of safety.
Under the sea
The “Under the Sea” theme is very popular in Early Years and Primary settings because it connects learning with something magical and exciting for children. Its importance goes beyond just being fun — it supports different areas of development.
