Lots of people find spelling difficult and English is one of the hardest languages to spell in. This page is to give you some ideas of strategies you might try, look at some of the most commonly misspelt words and to give you lists of words for each subject that you could practise to support you in lessons.

Spelling Strategy 1 - see a word within a word. Sometimes there are other smaller words in a bigger word. If you can spell the smaller word that can help you with the bigger word. You can create short sentences to help you remember.

Spelling Strategy 2 - words are often made up of root words with prefixes and suffixes (additional letters added to the start and end of a word). Learning spellings of common prefixes and suffixes can help support your spelling.

Spelling Strategy 3 - break down words by syllables. Breaking longer words into chunks can help you spell tricky sections in the middle of a word.

Spelling strategy 4 - try to recognise letter patterns. Most of you will have learned to read using phonics. There are common letter families such as igh or tch.
