When anyone ever asks what can I do to get better at English, the answer always has to be to read as much as possible. Reading builds essential understanding which supports learning in every single subject. While any reading at all is fantastic, the following is a list of books which pupils might like to have a look at. If there are any great books that you'd like to recommend please get in touch so others can enjoy them. The average family will use around 6000 words on a day to day basis at home whereas teen favourite Twilight contains 8507 unique words. It's a great way to expose you to a wider range of vocabulary and expression.
Book Clubs at Iveshead School. At Iveshead we offer a range of book clubs for different year groups.
Year 7 - Miss Browne's book club - After school on a Tuesday, I run a year 7 book and reading club. We started the club off by reading a collection of mythical short stories, reading a story a session and discussing characters and plot to solidify our understanding and appreciate each other's ideas surrounding the stories. Moving forward, we are going to explore books that cover a range of current issues (appropriate to age range) and work on our debating and communication skills, whilst enjoying the content of the stories and books that we are reading. The students seem to also enjoy the fact that there are occasionally free treats brought in!
Year 8 - Reading Rampage with Mr Jenkins - Reading Rampage is an initiative taking place throughout Leicestershire to encourage reading for pleasure in students. All participants, children across over 30 schools, are challenged to read as many of the 12 books provided as possible, rating them as they go. The most borrowed and most highly rated books across all schools will win prizes in a virtual online awards event taking place in June. The books themselves vary widely in genre, reading ability needed, size and representation of diverse backgrounds in both content and authors. As well as reading for pleasure, it's hoped that in reading these books participants' horizons are broadened as to what they read. The club itself will meet every Monday lunchtime on Week 1 in an informal setting where books read can be discussed and activities to do with them completed. Food will no doubt probably make an appearance at some point also. There's also the opportunity for (virtual) author visits and for students to win prizes to do with the event.
Year 9 - The Carnegie Book Challenge is going to be launched soon.

Book Fairs - Scholastic book fairs have always been popular at our school. These will be running twice a year one in November and one in March. Our next fair is on the 15th March 2022.
Our November book sale raised £488 pounds - £195 which was returned to the school in order for us to buy exciting new books for our library. These are some of the books we purchased.
