Morning practices are scheduled throughout the school year.
Staying on the team requires:
Consistent attitude and participation
Daily attendance once school starts, including Saturdays (practices and races)
Maintaining a minimum 2.0 GPA
Team Expectations:
Act with Perseverance, Respect, Integrity, Drive, and Empathy
Prompt attendance
Dress appropriately and arrive ready to practice
Wear proper running shoes
No music devices allowed during practice
The coaching staff and Portola High School are not responsible for lost or stolen items
All runners must sign and adhere to the team contract
Category 1 Offenses
Absent due to illness coded in Aeries without email notification
Minor profanity usage
First unexcused absence
Tardies to practice 5 minutes or less
Progressive Discipline:
Refer to coaching staff
More than 5 minutes late to practice
Ditching practice
Teacher complaint
Category A academic dishonesty
Multiple unexcused absences
Progressive Discipline:
Refer to coaching staff
In-season: Removal from the next competition
Category B or C academic dishonesty
Major disrespect or defiance
Bullying
5 or more unexcused absences
Progressive Discipline:
Refer to coaching staff
Meeting with athlete, coach, and parents
Completion of a restoration plan before competing again
Athlete may be dropped from the team
Please note that attendance is the primary means of earning a grade in Cross Country. Any student-athlete who misses multiple practices may be subject to the following grade deductions
A: No attendance issues; attends each practice and communicates clearly and in advance if missing for a verified reason.
B: 5 or more excused absences OR 3 unexcused absences
C: 4 to 5 unexcused absences
F: 6 or more unexcused absences
