Goals

Internship Goals

#Goal 1

Learning Goal #1: Growing my communication skills on a professional level.

To grow my communication skills I have participated in different volunteering events throughout the internship. The volunteering events allowed me to speak to patients and doctors from different backgrounds and from different specialties. This goal is important to me due to the reason that having good communication skills can improve your personal relationships by understanding others more clearely and it also allows yourself to be understood by others.

Due to being interested in becoming a pediatrician growing my communicaion skills would be a vital skill to master. Communcation as a doctor is important because as a doctor you need to be able to deliver messages clearly so that there is no room for misunderstanding or alteration of messages.

Growing my communication skills as a student would be benefical for me because when you clearly communicate both in person and in writing, you're more productive and efficient in a classroom setting.

#Goal 2

Learning Goal #2:  Becoming more detail oriented

Tasks, responsibilities, projects, and or activites that I have done enorder to reach this goal was scanning consent forms, filing records and assisting with quality control tasks. This goal is important to me because they help you produce high-quality work accurately with limited supervision.

Becoming more detail oriented is another vital skill that I would have to master at if I were to become a docotr due to assessing a patient, medication, procedures and documentation all rely on very specific information, with little to no margin for error.

Becoming more detail oriented will also benefit me now as a student because it will help me to focus my time, effort, and resources on work that matters most to effectively achieve my goals

#Goal 3

Goal # 3: Learn a new skillset

I enjoy learning therefore, I love to try new things, and gain experiences. I enjoy tackling challenges and providing solutions to difficult tasks. To ensure that I am learning something could be doing different tasks, go to more Komen Tussue Bank events, as well as volunteer to take on more responsibilities. Learning a new skill is important because it  would allow new opportunites, and possibilites.

Learning a new skill helps you become more flexible, and versatile with your work. Learning a new skill as a student will allow me not to limit myself, which is very important as a college student because you want to explore, and learn new things about yourself.

Career Goals

This internship has allowed me to gain a better understanding of what goes on behind the scences of research. From this research I was able to talk to talk to docotors, residents, and lab technicians. This summer I plan on working in a different research labatory, as well as doing more volunteer work, which will overall help with my career goal of going into medical school. Throughout the remaining time at IUPUI I plan on broadening my horizons by volunteering at hospitals and community involvement fairs, as well as try new things. A couple of volunteer events that I am interested in is tutoring elementary students during their school summer school. Tutoring students is always an enjoyable event for me because I like being able to help the student work through a problem and then seeing the light bulb turn on when they understand it. By tutoring elementary students I am hopeful to learn how to interact with all age groups which will help with my communication skills. Another volunteer event that I am looking forward to is volunteering at a  hospital in my hometown. Volunteering at a hospital allows you to observe so much and it allowes you to be gain insight on what its like working in a hospital environment.

This summer I am interning through a program called LSAMP (Louis Stokes Alliance For Minoirty Participation) where I will be interning at a site on campus. I haven't gotten  all of the details of excatly what my task(s) will be at this site but I am eagerd to learn!

One thing that I am looking forward to at IUPUI next year is becoming an RA at the Rivew walk apartments. I definitely believe that being RA will not only allow me to meet new people but it will help me work on my time mangement and problem solving skills.

This internship has confirmed my journey as a pre-med student due to the reason, that I was excited to go to the intership site everyday because it was an opportunity to learn and see something new.

Currently I am focused on raising my GPA up but my next step as a pre-med student is learning more about the MCAT test, and creating a timeline for it. Another step that I have to take as a pre-med student is to find shadowing opportunities. Even though I am currently set on persuing pediatrics, I am open to shadow from any speciality. I am also considering shadowing a PA, as well as observing in a dentist. Overall, as a pre-med student I need to start doing more activites and tasks that will help build my medical school application.

I am confident in my skills and ability to communicate, so I believe I would do a good job at making career related decisions and determining what is best for me.
